The Maya are a very ancient tribe. Their roots are lost in the antiquity of the ages. In the long time span of their existence, the Mayans have accomplished great feats. The Mayans are the creators of the most advanced civilization in ancient America. The height of their civilization lasted for over 3,000 years, from around 2,000 BC to AD 1521 when the Spanish came and invaded Mexico. They had produced a great empire that was controlled by a network of city-states with dense populations. They had a system of written language in the form of intricate hieroglyphs written on both stone and paper that was made out of bark. They were avid astronomers, and watched the stars closely. They developed a very accurate calendar based on the movements of the sun, the moon, and Venus. Their calendar was actually more accurate than the one (Gregorian) that is in common use today. The ancient Mayans had very developed arts such as sculpture, painting, and pottery and sciences such as medicine. There were many traders in their society, and many others were farmers. They grew corn and other crops in an advanced agricultural system which included irrigation.
